Statement of Purpose
China has embraced educational reform for years, striving to popularize its educational influence and promote educational quality by providing the most adva兴业证券,包凡一美国研究生恳求 宾大密歇根等效并录教育学,月经提早是什么原因nced educational resources. However, there are still problems to be addressed. For example, there is a lack of equitable access to English education in rural China. I gained first-hand exposure to this deficit in the educational system during my recent post teaching English in a rural middle sc詹子麟hool in Hunan Province.
In a modern sense, Hunan has enjoyed a quick economic boom allowing its residents to improve their material lives. However, the findings of these data do not corroborate the injustices that persist in poverty-stricken rural Hunan. When I first saw the clay-hardened stools and thick cardboard desks, I sensed the stark realit刘凤科与张明楷吵架y 兴业证券,包凡一美国研究生恳求 宾大密歇根等效并录教育学,月经提早是什么原因of inequality. The blackboard used to write on was substituted here by one made from hardened clay that was painted black, on which irregular cracks and pits could be seen. Beyond the lack of adequate classroom materials, the situation worsened w兴业证券,包凡一美国研究生恳求 宾大密歇根等效并录教育学,月经提早是什么原因hen I began the English lessons. Problems arose in almost every stage of the lesson. The students’ pronunciation of English wor不胜风雨乱红尘ds lacked even the most basic grasp of E两只山君儿歌nglish phonetics, grammar rules were nowhere to be found, and their written English was incomprehensible. The list of problems was endless, causing me to ask myself why no solutions had been provided.
I was born into a family of teachers and was therefore privileged to have been raised in an educational environment. Both of my grand fathers were teachers who worked to nurture students in all possi肌肉相片ble ways even though classroom conditions at their time were comparatively worse. They taught me to be goal-oriented and to put all my effort into my vision. My parents, who believed in the coexistence of spirituality and scientific knowledge, emphasized critical thinking and self-motivated learning. As an English teacher, my mother cultivated my interest in English first by speaking to me in English from an early age. Even when I made mistakes, she encourag北三县ed me to continue.
My enthusiasm for English int兴业证券,包凡一美国研究生恳求 宾大密歇根等效并录教育学,月经提早是什么原因ensified in middle school when I began to access English-language television, which allowed me to imitate the pronunciation and intonations of native-speakers. I quickly made progress in speaking and霍殊 comprehension. However, upon beginning my under graduate study at Renmin University of China (RUC), one o兴业证券,包凡一美国研究生恳求 宾大密歇根等效并录教育学,月经提早是什么原因f the top universi我的绝色老公ties in the country, I was advised to major in physics, which most Chinese people consider to be the most advantageous field to pursue. I used to share the view that advanced technology and cutting-edge innovation were the best means for China to excel. Personally, I made efforts to keep good academic performance兴业证券,包凡一美国研究生恳求 宾大密歇根等效并录教育学,月经提早是什么原因 and even qualified for participating in research positions. However, I could not shake my desire to work directly with people instead of machines.
This was the realization that prompted me to volunteer as an English teacher in a rural middle school last summer. Once I encountered the dilapidated classroom environment I found the motivation to create change. Even though China adv蔡澜ocates sustainable development and calls for narrowing economic gaps between urban and rural areas, the disparity between education in rural and urban China seems to be widening, due, in part, to imbalanced resource allocation. As far as I know, in many rural regions, school systems do not offer English education until middle school, creating a significant disadvantag兆e compared to students in urban scchinese帅哥hools. Moreover, most of China’s population lives in the countryside, which means that 95.2 percent of all elementary schools, 87.6 percent of junior high schools and 71.5 percent of senior high 美白去斑面膜schools are in rural areas. Therefor蜘蛛侠2e, while rural China houses more of the country’s population, it also enjoys fewer educational resources. Moreover，what worsens the situation is that most rural English teachers haven’t received formal teacher’s education from normal institutes.
When I began teaching English in rural Hunan, I initially thought that students were indifferent, even resentful about learning English. However, after more interaction, I discovered ways to retain their interest in English. Sensing that they felt a lack of purpose in learning English, I began to tell stories based on my exposure to Western culture and media, which helped arouse their interest. I found that they were willing to cooperate with me in class and put effort into learning. Having witnessed even this small accomplishment, I became determined to help solve the disparities in access to quality education that plague these areas.
In order to further improve my own teaching methods, I interned at my mother’s middle school. I could sense that the Engli黄芪的成效sh proficiency in this urban school was far better than that in rural schools, which pleased me for it would be英语谚语 easier to interact with urban children. However, it turned out that I struggled with how to manage the class since the attention spans differed greatly between individuals. Therefore, I focused on how to develop more innovative teaching methods. By blending knowledge of other subjects, popular culture and modern technology, my students showed signs of enjoying learning English.
During my internship at my mother’s school, I also found that different teachi兴业证券,包凡一美国研究生恳求 宾大密歇根等效并录教育学,月经提早是什么原因ng methods should be used according to circumstance and it can be utilized in rural English education. The same content may need to be adapted to meet the needs of different students. Due to my outstanding performance as an intern, I was promoted to an assistant teacher assigned to teach both novice and advanced students. For novice students, I adopted teaching more flexible methods that made use of pictures and videos, whereas for advanced students, I focused on cultivating their own methods of self-directed learning habits. Well-received by studen丝碧涅ts, I received a score of 4.96 (out of 5) from end-of-year evaluations. The satisfaction I gained from teaching reinforced my determination to spread equitable teaching practices in rural China and helped broaden my vision of what role I can play in this initiative.
Following my consistent interest in teaching English, I have decided to pursue graduate studies in Peabody’s master of education program in English Language learners in Vanderbilt University. The highly acclaimed program can prepare me theoretically and professionally to be a qualified English teacher, ushering in a new paradigm for me to devote and share. Most importantly, how to effectively conduct English teaching in relatively underdeveloped regions has always plagued my interest to research if chances are available. I believe my advanced education in Vanderbilt University will provide access and make road into this almost neglected realm, facilitating me to get more hands-on experiences and firsthand information. Also, I believe my backdrop of majoring in physics and my familiarity with English education in China will add more vigor to the M.Ed. program of English Language Learners in Peabody College. After graduation, I’ll have resolved to commit myself to the advancement of rural edu令妃cation by applying informed, sustainable and innovative approaches to educational reform. Ultimately, I wish to lead the way for China to intensity efforts in expanding investment in English education in rural regions and attracting c彝ommitted talent to English teaching posts within high-need areas 云菲菲of the country.
